FUNDING: start-up grant from BC Hydro

Mark Hellman - Arts in Community

With One Voice 2006 – Louise Rose, soloist

The Vic High Neighbourhood Choir welcomed current and former student, staff, faculty, families, friends and neighbours of western Canada’s oldest high school to participate in an all-levels, non-auditioned, a capella vocal ensemble, supporting program development at Victoria High School through participation in school events, fundraising activities, and outreach in the community.

Mark Hellman - Choir DirectorThe choir explored roots music, sampling from traditions through the ages and from around the world: songs of praise and thanks, chants and hollers, gospels, sea chanteys, laments, celebrations and protest songs.  Each spring, a concert was held to support a local charity or to raise funds for arts programming at the school, with a variety of guest soloists, including Victoria’s own Colleen Eccleston.

TRAVOIS – THE ST. NORBERT COMMUNITY PLAY

Editor, Director of Writing Development (3 months)

Produced by the newly-formed St. Norbert Arts and Cultural Centre (SNACC) in southern Manitoba, TRAVOIS was the second Community Play (in the model of Ann Jellicoe and the Colway Theatre Trust) to be produced in Canada.

Mark Hellman - St. Norbert Community Play

TRAVOIS differed from the original model in a distinct way: rather than being written by a professional playwright, TRAVOIS was researched and collectively written by a team of 40 writers, ages 14 – 80.  As Director of Writing Development, Mark held a writers’ retreat, during which teams were assembled to address the six different stages on which the play was to be held and the 20,000 years of history that the play would cover.  Mark trained and supervised the teams independently, while elements of visual art, installation, earthworks, music, poetry, storytelling, theatre, dance, procession, and film were incorporated into the vision of the play.  As Editor of TRAVOIS, Mark was responsible for assembling and editing the final performance score prior to the start of rehearsals.
